 Cities of the Underworld

A great documentary offered by the History Channel on the 'not-so-ruined' ruins which lie under the streets of Istanbul. This episode in particular seems to have led to a new series premiering April 23 with 'Cities of the Underworld: Scotland's Sin City.' I am now definitely compelled to place Istanbul on my life's travelling agenda!

Congrats to my buddy, Andy Smith, who was recently appointed Ship Manager of the Battleship Texas! A 'boat guy' couldn't ask for a better opportunity. Dr. Doran would be proud! The ship is located in LaPorte, Texas and falls under the jurisdiction of the Texas Parks and Wildlife, State Parks Division.

 The Theban Mapping Project

Since its inception in 1978, the Theban Mapping Project (TMP, now based at the American University in Cairo) has been working to prepare a comprehensive archaeological database of Thebes. With its thousands of tombs and temples, Thebes is one of the world's most important archaeological zones. Sadly, however, it has not fared well over the years. Treasure-hunters and curio-seekers plundered it in the past; pollution, rising ground water, and mass-tourism threaten it in the present. Even early archaeologists destroyed valuable information in their search for museum-quality pieces.
